Camp Store
Besides being a great place to watch wildlife, the Chassahowitzka
River Camp Store stocks all kinds of stuff needed for camping,
fishing, snacking & amusement. It also features a local crafts/art
area within the store. Displayed here are photos by Gary Kuhl,
handmade pine needle baskets by Theresa Buddock &
"Chassahowands" by Dennis Blauer, among other works. Here
you will also find postcards & other souvenirs branded with the
Chassahowitzka River Campground moniker. After visiting our
camp store, no relative will ever accuse you of returning with just
a "lousy t-shirt" but we have those too.
A "Chassahowand" is a magic wand, roughly hewn from cedar heart, made more beautiful by
the inclusion of small knot holes & pinkish orange grain. Made from native trees, it draws it
energy from the numerous springs surrounding the Chassahowitzka River. One needs only to
return occasionally & let it rest on the rail at the campground to recharge. Once fully charged,
to increase the chances of your wishes coming true, you simply point it at the object of your
desire & utter the magic phrase "Chassahowitzka"; correct pronunciation is important!
Front Deck
The spacious front deck overlooks the main lagoon where all the waterside activity occurs. To
one side of it lies a natural area where feeders attract hummingbirds, bats, cardinals, titmice, &
squirrels. From this point you can also see a 900+ year old cypress tree, the likes of which
were logged extensively during the late 1800s. For your relaxing pleasure are ample picnic
seating & a few benches. Just try to sit & not be impressed by the views & nature!
Boat House
Originally Miss Maggie's bait & fishing store, this small building & covered dock now houses
the kayak & other vessels rental concession. It also is a favorite gathering place for campers &
locals to catch up on happenings, as well as a wonderful sound stage because the acoustics of
the lagoon in front are akin to a natural amphitheater.
Boat Ramp
Replaced & upgraded in 2010, the main boat ramp is one of the
best in Citrus County. It's big enough for launching two vessels
at once & features a grooved concrete surface so you never
have to worry about traction. If you're a people watcher, it's
also a great place to hang out & watch the amazing variety of
boats & other watercraft & the associated human antics.
As well there is a recently installed separate kayak & canoe
launching area off to the side with a wide grassy area between
the two ramps where you can stage supplies or just sit around
& enjoy some rays of sunshine.
Parking
A large paved parking lot abuts the camp store & dock/ boat ramp area. While using the boat
ramp for launching is free, there is a small fee for parking a vehicle with or without a trailer. It
also features a bicycle parking rack, informational kiosk & restrooms. Overflow parking on
busy days also includes the tree tunnel & various parts of the campgrounds.
Rental Cabin
A remodeled & fully furnished rental cabin is available near the entrance to the campground. It
is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cedar sided home with AC, fireplace, covered parking, & wifi. It will sleep
up to 8 persons with 2 full beds in one of the bedrooms, 1 queen bed in another bedroom & pull
out sofa bed in the living room. A minimum stay of 2 nights applies.
Leisure Pavillion
This heated & AC'd enclosed general purpose building has outside shuffleboard, a few games
inside, electronic dartboard & 5 in 1 tabletop stereo. It seats about 60 people, 40 comfortably
fully packed & has ample tinted windows which can effectively turn it into a screened Florida
room. It is available for special events & is a great place for campers to just hang out.
Bath House
The bath house is only two years old. Here Campers have everything you'd expect including
private showers. For comfort, men's & women's restrooms are heated & air conditioned &
cleaned daily. They have coded door locks for security. On the end opposite from the restroom
entrances is a laundry area with coin-operated washers & dryers as well as a screened in area
with Coke machine & drinking fountains.
WiFi Signals
Broadcasting throughout the RV camping area & the riverside dock area are WiFi signals
which require codes for connections. The signal in the RV area features high download volume
capability so campers can get streaming TV channels such as NetFlix.
